I’m Working On Instinct And Blind Faith Here

I just glanced at the proportions of Wizards, wondering how balanced I was being with my two main characters. As of right now there is less than a hundred words difference in the number of words I’ve written for each of them. My subconscious looking out for me again? I swear there are these huge […]

Paleolithic. I Looked It Up.

Page from Hawkeye #01, by Matt Fraction and David Aja. Text over a series of images of Hawkeye taking a nasty fall: You cowboy around with the Avengers some. Guys got, what, armor. magic. Super-powers. Super-strength. Shrink-dust. Grow-rays. Magic. Healing factors. I'm an orphan raised by carnies fighting with a stick and a string from the Paleolithic era. So when I say this looks 'bad'? I promise you it feels worse. Then, over an image of him in traction in a hospital bed: "Got yourself pretty banged up there, Mr Barton ...shattered pelvis, three broken ribs, sprained you neck, cracked you fibia, left clavicle, right ulna... and you spleen nearly ruptured." / "Pssh. Thought you said I was hurt, Doc." Paleolithic. I looked it up.

Who says comics never teach you anything? Paleolithic. I have now learned as much from this single page as I have from certain exhibits in the four museums I’ve wandered through in the last few days. Although to be fair, some of those exhibits were entirely in Spanish…

View from the top of the temple of the moon pyramid at Teotihuacán, along the Avenue of the dead, including the temple of the sun to the left and multiple small structures in the foreground

A couple of weeks ago in San Francisco Arkem threatened to kill me, but in the end he didn’t because apparently I am very charming. I was indulging in my recurring urge to climb things and made him follow me up a rather impressive hill.* When we were halfway up said very steep thing Arkem […]

I Know It When I See It?

I never came across formal grammar in school until I started learning a foreign language. And then it was like ‘these are verbs, these are adjectives, and this is the wacky way they use them in French’. I was never taught English grammar in school. Of course, that doesn’t mean they don’t teach it. My […]

Oh. Well. Hm. Good? So Jen (the agent in question) thinks my writing is hilarious and darling (glee!), and in the sections on the advice form that are like ‘what to do next’ she wrote ‘send Jen more’ and put smiley faces and her email address, which… AWESOME. But. We talked about the book. As […]

Dead, but Dreaming

Suddenly realised that my Twitter stream could just be a pre-programmed chronicle of my reading history… But no, I am still here, I am still writing (ask me about “Binder” or “Tender” sometime, very happily writing!) Also discovering the pains joys struggles of overloading on teaching, whilst also realising I only have half a year to […]

Not Unpublished, “Pre-Published”

Yesterday I finally escaped the acid flashback that was Disneyland and California’s hints that it might want to tremble into the sea, and I am now watching the lights of the Vegas strip come on like a neon sunrise. Looking back from here the SCBWI conference looks like it was a moment of delightful sanity. […]

This is Not a Pun*

Eeyore looking at his tail. Caption, "It's not much of a tail but I'm sort of attached to it."

New theory. Disney isn’t made of happiness or bluebirds or terrifyingly peppy smiles. It’s made of puns. All the puns came together and they formed Disneyland. And I was a leetle bit afraid. * I was going to pun. I was. I confess. But then, I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I went […]

My Business Cards Say ‘Gosh, She’s a Bit Odd’*

Last night you were unhinged. You were like some desperate, howling demon. You frightened me. Do it again! — Morticia Addams

I’ve been meaning to make this post since my business cards arrived but I keep forgetting because I’m easily distracted by shiny things. Like my business cards! Which are brilliant.** Honestly, I look at my cards and think, How is everyone in the universe not using these cards? I acknowledge that there may be a […]
