Brimming With the Words That Go Unsung

Sara Bareilles screenshot from the videoclip of Gonna Get over You. She's dancing with backup in a supermarket aisle. All the dancers dressed identically in 50's style -- blue jeans, white t-shirts, black leather jackets, and sneakers.

This song is about dancing in supermarket aisles. Or loving the wrong person. One of those. The part I’ve quoted below is very… well, it could be one of my characters saying that. The other one’s a little more likely to dance in supermarket aisles though. I like the juxtaposition of the happy  music and […]

The Explanation is Not Important

"Housepets" comic. A... puppy(?) and a dog(?) stand in front of a green house. The puppy says, "Huh? This isn't my house." The dog says, "I was going to ask, why did the wolves show up and take you home last night?" The scene shifts the puppy standing with a wolf(?). The wolf says, "King! There you are. I wanted to let you know, the ferrets are very excited to bring a domestic onboard the equal challenge program! You might still be upset that your old owner had to leave quite suddenly, but I want to reassure you we will do everything in our power to make you feel at home." The puppy says, "...WHY did you have a shaving kit inside your bathroom?" The wolf calls out, "HEY DARYL! WHY DO YOU HAVE A SHAVING KIT IN OUR BATHROOM?" A voice answers distantly, "A wolf has to have his secrets."

Someone linked me to this comic. Not the whole thing. Just this strip in particular. I don’t know why. I no longer know who. I don’t have the slightest idea what’s going on. But it makes me laugh anyway. One day I’ll probably read the rest of the comic, and perhaps then I’ll understand. In […]

When the Music Gets Down in Your Soul

Album cover for "Colorblind" by Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Features a stylised speaker that appears to be set at the centre of a flower, with lightning crackling across it.

I love this song. It’s got a fantastic beat — great to dance to, great to run to. And the lyrics are sorta awesome. It’s one of those catchy songs that gets stuck in your head but when you find yourself singing along you don’t have to be appalled at yourself. Whether it’s rock and roll […]

I Sports. You Sports. We All Sports, Sports, Sports… What?

VectorBelly comic featuring a (probably) journalist and a (maybe) football player. Journalist says, "You were sportsing pretty hard out there. A lot of sports happened. Why do you think you lost?" The player says, "We sportsed our best and scored points, but the other team was sportsing, too, and they scored even more points." The journalist asks, "What's your strategy for the next match?" The player, gesturing emphatically, says, "We need to stop the other team form scoring points while we ourselves score many points." The journalist says, "Now back to the studio for ten hours of sports analysis." The player says, "My income is higher than most countries."

I’m going to watch a sport thing on Saturday to try to discover if I actually like it or if I simply enjoy listening to people I know tell me cool stories about it. (They know where my weaknesses are.) I suspect, as I have never watched an entire game, that it’s the second. […]

Until He’s Sober

Every time I hear this song in context of Drink Me, I hear the line ‘until he’s sober’ and start snickering because… yeah, that’s not gonna happen. Either that or I have flashbacks to when this was the ringtone I had for my honey and flail for my phone before I remember myself. It’s very dignified […]

Okay, so this is embarrassing. One of the tabs I just finished dealing with. One of the ones that was open. Not re-opened from bookmarks or anything. One in my current ‘do something about this’ tab group. Was from 2 January 2013. Yes. When I said I hadn’t finished my admin stuff from the first […]

This is simply an image of the text of the poem

(battle scars) so one day a boy will come along with lips that taste like gunpowder and he will make you feel like your body is a war zone, will kiss your neck and plant mines beneath your skin and set them off with long, trailing fingers — and sometimes you will feel like you […]

You Mustn’t Be Afraid to Dream a Little Bigger, Darling

This is not the song I was going to post today. But a couple of days ago I was thinking about stuff — it’s a new year and my birthday’s coming up pretty soon — so I was having one of those look at your life, look at your choices moments. And you know what I thought? If my life […]

Racing the Red Queen

The Queen of Hearts by Simon Sherry. Shows the Red Queen as a disjoined outlined automaton-like figure with a heart for a head. She is playing croquet with an axe, her ball a bleeding rose. There is blood on the mallet/axe and on her free hand.

I run. It’s a thing that I do.* Every weekday.** When I’ve got it together.*** I run on a treadmill.**** It makes me feel like I’m in Alice Through the Looking Glass, running the Red Queen’s race.      “Well, in our country,” said Alice, still panting a little, “you’d generally get to somewhere else — if […]

Better if You Don’t Think About it

Girls with slingshots comic. Character A says, "Are we still on for tonight?" Character B replies, "Yep! I've got the Jenga and Nirvana ready!" Character C asks, "Jenga and Nirvana?" Character B replies, "Yeah! We're gonna party like it's 1994!" Character C smiles, "Heh. Okay, that I can get into. My mom kept all my CD's and band tee shirts from ten years a--" She cuts herself off. Her face blanks and then becomes upset. Finally she says, "Twenty. Twenty years ago." Character B places a comforting hand on Character C's arm, "It's okay, we can drink like it's 2014."
