Screen capture from the movie "Prometheus" picturing three space suited people on an alien planet WITHOUT THEIR HELMETS

Me: I just realised I’ve given this ship an airlock that it shouldn’t have out of existential panic and now have to figure out how to write it out. Rick: Don’t they need airlocks? Me: Ships that are meant to dock with one another should have airlocks. This ship is docking with another, hence I […]

Sesame Street's The Count with the caption: Sparkle? Oh, hell no.

Rick: Pirates? Me: Pirates. Vampires. Thieves. Smugglers. Whatever. Rick: I remember you telling me about vampires. Me: Same thing. Rick: How does that work? Vampires can’t be pirates. Pirates are uncouth, vampires are… well they are couth. Me: That’s a stereotype. You don’t think I’m writing about stereotypes, do you? Rick: I’m guessing the answer […]

Anthropomorphisation: It’s a Life Choice

A question from a multiple choice test. The question is 'If your car begins to hydroplane you should:' and the options are A: Do nothing and allow your car to turn into the plane it has always dreamed of; B: Reduce your speed and let the car decelerate; C: Immediately slam the brakes; D: Pump the brakes repeatedly.

I am not sure why but I am instantly drawn to people who apologise to inanimate objects or treat robots like people.   A is a valid option.

Against an appallingly pink background is the sketch of a gun with a flag dangling from the barrel instead of the traditional fake-gun flag which would say 'bang', this one says 'I am not a gun, I am a literary device'.

Me: There are three ideas that came together to call this book into being — Rick: Alcohol, wizards and explosions? Me: (laughing) No… This book is based around three things. The thing with the magic and the alcohol. The thing with the pirates. And this friendship. I’ve mentioned the magic (although I haven’t explained about […]

silhouette of flying squid/jellyfish type thing

A few days ago a new XKCD comic was posted. This is not in any way unusual. But it has been drawn to my attention that many people did not obey the comic. This is sad. It’s title was click and drag, people. And I think that you should. How else will you find the flying squid/jellyfish […]

A young girl is playing in her bedroom when she hears her mother call to her from the first floor kitchen. As she descends the staircase and strides down the passageway, hands emerge from a hall closet and pull her in while she’s passing by. When the girl’s eyes finally acclimate to the darkness, she […]

I’m in love with my speakers. I’m just going to say it. They’re not even mine. But they’re in my living room vibrating my couch so… whatever. They’re mine right now. And I’m in love with them. Well, okay, maybe not the speakers so much as the beat. I like to feel it through my […]

I don’t know what it is but I can’t spell when I’m asleep. Or, not can’t spell. I get words mixed up. Mostly homophones like ‘retch’ and ‘wretch’ and ‘through’ and ‘threw’. The sort of distinction that’s obvious, but that my unconscious mind is apparently incapable of making. It also happens if I’m composing and […]

in motion photograph of a sinuous line of dominoes in the process of falling

In the last eight writing days (read: all the writing days I’ve had since I got back as the other days were taken up with boring admin-ity crap and being weekends) I’ve written more than ten thousand words of Wizards. Or, to put it another way, a volume that represents a quarter of the current […]
