World War Z is book by Max Brooks about the zombie apocalypse, framed as a series of interviews after the fact. Its structure is this brilliant, interlocking thing where each story/interview is complete in itself but the larger story proceeds step by step taking you from the first outbreak to where they are now.
It has an audio book, which while abridged, is still awesome, not least for the spectacular cast of voice actors, including Alan Alda and Mark Hamill.
And now, apparently, they’ve made a movie. The trailer looks like they may have wandered a ways from the book, but still…

Now that Twilight is wrapping up, I guess we need a new type of antagonistic protagonist lifeform. Is it just me that thinks zombies are almost overexposed now?
As the WWZ novel pre-empted this trend, I hope it does not get lost in the woods.

‘The zombie apocalypse’ is certainly an incredibly well-used idea at this point. I was actually reading a short story the other day that was about a vampire apocalypse and I had to keep stopping and reminding myself, “Vampires, not zombies” because the filmographer in my head was feeling in the wrong villains.

What a choice. Do you prefer your brains eaten, or your blood sucked out of your body. I guess the vampire would be preferable, since supposedly you become more handsome or beautiful when you are ‘turned’. Rotting flesh and shuffling does not excite the ladies, I imagine =)

In the instance of this particular story the vampire option was definitely a better choice. After the initial blood madness the person (vampire?) retained their original personality, just stronger, faster etc. I couldn’t help thinking that the whole thing would be rather short-lived. The wave of new vampires would quickly take out the human population, and then what’re they going to eat?

Supposedly vampires can feast on the undead. In that case, they could go after zombies, possibly go cannibal, or dig up some corpses.

Cannibalism seems like the way to go then. Although it’s not all that sustainable. I don’t think anyone is the winner in that apocalypse.
